Fiber Termination Class

This class REQUIRES that you wear long pants and have access to eye protection. I will accept glasses or lab safety glasses. (The lab has two pairs for class use on a first come first served basis.)

Sillybus:

1. Introduction: fiber optic safety, history, and technology behind fiber optic data trasmission.

2. Anaerobic: binary epoxy system. (The nastiest system on earth, but if you know this one, you can do just about any other system.)

3. 3M Volition: inexpensive crimp and polish system. Very fast, very easy, and low loss

A Day in the Life of Aneorobic Fiber Termination

Strip with the "no-nik"

Dry fit the fiber into the connector

Use the needle to push the glue into the connector

Stop when you see the tiny dot of glue at the tip

"Paint" the primer liberally over the exposed fiber

Slowly insert the fiber through the connector

You should have about 1 inch of fiber protruding

Fluff up the kevlar around the base of the connector

Run the strength ring up and crimp to the connector

Gently touch the fiber with the cleaver and pull the fiber off. Dispose carefully

Air polishing "sands" off the stub and prevents breakage

Polish with a quality puck on glass to create a flat mating surface
